"The Crimson Echo" - 2021

In my crimson dream, the river drowns the memory of desires, now forgotten. Fleeting moments, no longer at the entrance of my heart.
I shudder at the thought of loves embrace - the comfort of the familiar, now a stranger. No longer belonging, I watch their blind gaze… The flies of despair eating at my soul as I hear the echoes of heavens curse calling me.
Still, I remain in the shackles of disparity, seeking solitude along the road of my fate."

During the COVID pandemic, the world faced at its doorstep the realities of disease, one that disrupted the everyday existences. Yet in the context of Africa, it is not the pandemic that continues to cause strife to the progress of the continent, but the fact remains the impact of Neglected Tropical Disease that echoes in all aspects of progress. The most evident being in rural regions that have limited access to medical facilities and clean water which has a direct correlation not only to the quality of life of each individual but also to the advancement of a nation’s future generation.

Therefore, the collection is a reflection not just on the disease but the human toll it takes on the psyche of those who have encountered NTD’s. Each image an exploration of the human emotion that binds us and not only looking at the cause and effect of a disease.  In a world where the global audience is continually bombarded with the one-sided depictions of Africa, often there is a lack of exploration as it relates to a visual representation that encompasses the stories of Africa through a viewpoint that also evokes our humanity. In essence, utilizing art as a tool to ask questions, show the unseen and provoke the onlooker to encounter the depths of our shared human emotions.

This collection, “The Crimson Echo,” was commissioned by the END Fund and supported by the Reaching the Last Mile Fund.
